WEEK NINE PREVIEWS
Mansfield (1-7, 0-4) at Lamar (5-3, 2-2)
· THE SERIES: Lamar leads the series, 9-2, and has a 5-1 edge at Cravens Field.
· LAST WEEK: Mansfield was drubbed by Martin last week, 58-7, while Lamar took the week off after losing to Bowie, 35-13.
· CALL THEM MANSFIEL: The Tigers haven’t played much defense lately. The 58 points they allowed to Bowie and Martin mark the first time in school history that Mansfield has allowed 50-plus points in back-to-back games.
THE VIKING-TIGER SERIES:
1988 Lamar, 37-16 (Anderson) 1994 Lamar, 49-7 (Cravens) 2000 Mansfield, 27-26 (Cravens)
1989 Lamar, 27-6 (Cravens) 1995 Lamar, 42-20 (Cravens) 2001 Lamar, 21-14 (Anderson)
1990 Lamar, 24-0 (Anderson) 1998 Lamar, 24-10 (Cravens) 2008 Mansfield, 49-38 (Anderson)
1991 Lamar, 29-7 (Cravens) 1999 Lamar, 27-10 (Anderson)
Bowie (6-2, 3-1) at Sam Houston (3-6, 1-4)
· THE SERIES: Sam Houston leads the series, 14-10-1, but Bowie has won the last four. The Texans own a 9-4-1 edge at Wilemon Field.
· LAST WEEK: Bowie remains in a tie for the district lead after a 59-35 loss to Arlington last week, the fifth-most points the Volunteers have ever allowed in a game. (The record is 63 against Irving in 1999). Sam Houston lost a wild 60-54 decision to Mansfield Summit.
· HOW WILD WAS IT?: A number of school and city records were set last week in Sam Houston’s loss to Summit. First, the Texans broke their own city record for points scored by a losing team, which was set in a 51-50 loss to Martin in 1999. The 114 total points scored made it the highest scoring game in AISD history, topping the 111 tallied in Martin’s 69-42 win over Sam Houston in 2006. In addition, it was the first game in AISD history in which neither team punted. The previous low for punts was one, set in the 1999 Martin-Sam Houston game.
· BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: Sam Houston quarterback Jamal Turner broke a city record of his own last week, when he rushed for 248 yards in the loss. That broke the AISD record of 220 yards rushing in a game by a quarterback, set in 1995 by Lamar’s Joe Walker. Turner, who broke Walker’s record of 1,204 yards rushing by a quarterback in a season two weeks ago, leads the district in rushing with 1,617 yards.
· THE END OF THE LINE: Bowie’s loss snapped a 14-game city winning streak dating back to 2006. It also ended the Vols’ nine-game district winning streak, going back to 2007.
· NO HAPPY ENDING: Sam Houston has not won its last regular season game since 2003.

Martin (5-3, 3-1) at Mansfield Summit (3-5, 2-2)
· THE SERIES: Martin leads the series, winning the only meeting, 24-20, last year at Cravens Field.
· LAST WEEK: Both teams scored a lot of points last week, but only one got to enjoy it. Martin routed Mansfield 58-7, while Summit outlasted Sam Houston, 60-54, having to stop a pass in the end zone on the last play of the game.
· LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD: Martin’s 58 points last week were the second-most in school history. The record is 69, set against Sam Houston in 2006. Summit’s 60 points were the third-highest total in school history. The Jaguars’ school record is 66, set against Timberview in 2004.
South Grand Prairie (4-4, 2-2) at Irving MacArthur (4-4, 1-3)
· THE SERIES: MacArthur leads the series, 16-11, and has won six of the last nine. The Cardinals also have a 9-4 advantage at Irving Schools Stadium.
· LAST WEEK: South Grand Prairie moved a step closer to the playoffs with a 38-27 win over Duncanville, while MacArthur was thrashed by Cedar Hill, 66-31.

WEEK EIGHT PREVIEWS
Arlington (6-2, 3-1) at Bowie (6-1, 3-0)
· THE SERIES: Arlington leads the series, 18-7, even though Bowie has won four of the last five. The Colts have won 12 of the 16 games played at Maverick Stadium.
· LAST WEEK: Arlington established several city and school records with a 62-26 thumping of Mansfield Summit. (More on that later). Bowie cruised past Lamar, 35-13.
· VOLUNTEERING FOR VICTORY: A win on Friday would give Bowie 15 consecutive city victories, equaling the all-time record set by Lamar from 1988 to 1993. The Volunteers haven’t lost a city game since Oct. 28, 2005, a 44-39 decision to Martin.
· BREAKING OUT OF THE CORRAL: Arlington High has been on a roll lately, to put it mildly. The Colts poured 62 points on Summit last week, making them the first team in AISD history to post back-to-back 60-point games. The Green Machine also rang up a school record 659 yards in the contest, making the Colts the first team in city history to have back-to-back 600-yard games. As if that were not enough, Arlington became the second team in AISD history to play two consecutive games without punting. The other one was Seguin in 2005.
· THE RECORD THEY DIDN’T BREAK: Surprisingly, Arlington’s 125 points in consecutive games is not a city record. In 2003, Lamar tacked on 49 against Bowie and 79 against Fort Worth Paschal for a two-game total of 128.
· THEN THERE’S THE QUARTERBACK: Arlington’s Matt Joeckel was a busy fellow on Friday night as well. His five touchdown passes against Summit gave him 53 for his career and tied the AISD record of 53 set by Bowie’s Christian Matthews last year. In addition, Joeckel’s 396 yards passing and 122 yards rushing gave him an AISD record 518 yards of total offense in one game. The record had been 517 by Sam Houston’s Josh Holmes against Duncanville in 2004.
THE COLT-VOLUNTEER SERIES:
1975 Arlington, 28-0 (Wile) 1993 Arlington, 41-26 (Mav) 2002 Arlington, 49-24 (Mav)

1992 Arlington, 42-14 (Mav) 2001 Arlington, 28-23 (Mav)
Mansfield (1-6, 0-3) at Martin (5-3, 2-1)
· THE SERIES: Martin leads the series, 8-4, and has won four of the last six. The Tigers have won two of the three games at Cravens Field, where the Warriors haven’t beaten Mansfield since 1998.
· LAST WEEK: Martin claimed its fifth win of the season with a 46-27 win over Sam Houston, while Mansfield spent last week licking its wounds from a 58-20 beating from Bowie two weeks ago.
· TOOTHLESS TIGERS: Now a far cry from last year’s playoff team, Mansfield has lost six consecutive games for the first time since 2003, when the Tigers started the season 0-6.

Grand Prairie (1-5, 1-2) at Irving Nimitz (5-3, 2-2)
· THE SERIES: Nimitz leads the series, 20-13-2, although the Gophers have won the last two. The Vikings have a 12-5 edge at Irving Schools Stadium, where Grand Prairie has not beaten Nimitz since 2001.
· LAST WEEK: After a 2-0 district start, Nimitz dropped its second consecutive district game with a 21-10 loss to Irving MacArthur, while Grand Prairie took the week off to celebrate its 18-14 win over MacArthur.

· LAST WEEK: Summit was splattered by Arlington, 62-26, while Sam Houston was routed by Martin, 46-27.

WEEK SEVEN PREVIEWS
Bowie (5-1, 2-0) at Lamar (5-2, 2-1)
THE SERIES: The Vikings lead the series, 22-3, but Bowie has won the last three years. Lamar has won 11 of the 12 games at Cravens Field.
LAST WEEK: Lamar improved to 2-1 in the district with a 28-21 win over Mansfield Summit, while Bowie mashed Mansfield, 58-20. The 58 points were the second-highest total in school history, trailing only the 62 scored on Fort Worth Wyatt last year.
REPEAT PERFORMANCE: Bowie is going for its third straight 3-0 district start. The last two years represent the only two seasons the Volunteers were 3-0 in district.
RUNNING IT UP: Lamar’s Ja’Terrian Douglas went over the 1,000 yard mark Friday night with 194 yards against Summit. That raises his career total to 3,199, passing former Lamar standouts Willie Montgomery, Michael Davenport and Ryan Lyons. He is now sixth on the city’s career rushing list, and needs 151 yards to overtake former Arlington great Rusty Gunn for fifth place.
BIG SIX: Douglas also moved into sixth place on the career scoring list last week. Douglas now has 264 points, on 43 touchdowns and three 2-point conversions. That pushed him ahead of Lamar’s Joe Walker for sixth and leaves him 20 points shy of Arlington’s Ricky Brown for fifth place.

SAM SLAMMED: Friday’s loss was the worst in school history for the Texans. The previous worst loss was 52 points, set in losses to Cedar Hill and DeSoto two years ago. LAST WEEK: Arlington flexed its muscles with a 63-6 stomping of Sam Houston, while Summit fell to Lamar, 28-21.
FINDING THE END ZONE: Arlington’s Matt Joeckel fired three touchdown passes last week against Sam Houston, the fifth time this season he’s done that. That equals the city record of five times in a season, held by Arlington’s Trent Fuller in 1992.
FIVE GRAND: Joeckel also became the second player in AISD history to pass for 5,000 career yards in last week’s game. Joeckel now has 5,187 yards, still 1,368 yards short of Christian Matthews’ city record of 6,555.
